You need a chorus, some distortion and a Delay with the delay time
set to 350 milliseconds and a lot of echo (at least for the first part).

Does anybody else consider this song a classic of the 80's or is it just me?

* I agree....great tune! *

Keyboard intro - A and G

Scratch the 4th and 5th strings to make the Seagull effect.

    (use the delay! - play the chord and mute it almost immediately)
!--------------13--------------------13----!
!--10----------13-------10-----------13----!
!---9----------10--------9-----------10----!
!---7--------------------7-----------------!
!------------------------------------------!

* The intro chords as I hear them:
*
*  (A)     (G sus5)
* --5------10-----------
* --5-------8-----------
* --2-------7-----------
* ----------------------
* ----------------------
* ----------------------
*
* As suggested, use chorus and delay set to about 350-400ms
* Fast rock beat about 142 bpm.

* My take on the verses:
*
* The chords are A and G.
* Place your fingers in the root 6 barre position, like:
*
* ------------
* ----5-------
* ----6-------
* ----7-------
* ------------
* ------------
*
* and use the open D string to "bounce" off of...
*
*                 (A)
* -------------------------------------------------
* ----5--5--5--------------------------------------
* --------------7----------------------------------
* -----------------7--7--7--0--7--0--7--7--7--0----
* -------------------------------------------------
* -------------------------------------------------
*
*                 (G)
* -------------------------------------------------
* ----5--5--5--------------------------------------
* --------------7----------------------------------
* -----------------5--5--5--0--5--0--5--5--5--0----
* -------------------------------------------------
* -------------------------------------------------
*
* and pick it back up with:
*
*                    (A)
* ---------------------------------
* -----------------5---------------
* ----0--2--0-/-6------------------
* --------------------7------------
* ---------------------------------
* ---------------------------------
*
* all the while maintaining the root 6 barre finger position.

Now for the chorus: (just follow the voice)

  And I    r a a n  I ran so far away...
!------------------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------------------!
!--7--7>9--7--5-----5--7--5--7--7>9--9--7--7--5--7--7-7--5---!
!----------------7-------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------------------!

(it's the same thing for "I just ran, I ran all night and day")

Listen to the song to know what parts to repeat (after the chorus
comes the intro again, with the space-age delay and then the verse again).

Here comes the solo:

Play this very fast, muting at first and gradually letting go of the string
so that at the end it's ringing.

!------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------!
!-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3--!
!------------------------------------------------!

* I like the heavier 8th fret C chord here:
*
*  (C)
* ---------------------
* ---------------------
* ---------------------
* --10--10--10--10-----
* --10--10--10--10-----
* --8---8---8---8------ (repeat, building....)
*
* Turn on the delay with this C chord (about 350-400ms).
* Use this delay setting for the entire solo.
* The opening notes of the solo will blend with the C chord.

!--5-5-5---5-5-3-5----5-5-5--5-5-5--5-3-3---3-3---3--3-3--!
!-----------------------------------------------5---------!
!---------------------------------------------------------!
!---------------------------------------------------------!
!---------------------------------------------------------!
!---------------------------------------------------------!

!--5>7--5>7--7--5-5--3-5--5-5-5--5-5-5-5-3-3---3-------!
!--------------------------------------------5---------!
!-------------------------------------------------2>9--!
!------------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------------!
!------------------------------------------------------!

!--10-8-8-----8-8-8----8-10>12-12-10-10-8-10--8-10-10>12-10-8-----!
!----------10-------10----------------------------------------10--!
!-----------------------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------------------!

!------8-8-8----8-10>12-12-10-10-8-10-!
!--10--------10-----------------------!
!-------------------------------------!
!-------------------------------------!
!-------------------------------------!
!-------------------------------------!

* For the solo, I prefer to keep my hand at the 8th fret C chord and use:
*
*  (C)
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* --8-10-10-10-8-10-8-10----10-10-10-10-10-10-10-8-8---8--10b-----
* ---------------------------------------------------9------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
*
*  (C)
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* --10b--10-10---8-10----10-10-10-10-10-10-10-8-8---8-------------
* ------------------------------------------------9---------------
* ----------------------------------------------------(5)-/-(13)--
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
*
*  (F)
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ---15-13--------13------13--15b-15b--15-15--13-15---------------
* -------------14------14-----------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
*
*  (F)
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* -15-15-15-15-15-17-15--13-13-----13-----13-15b-15b-15-15--13-^15
* ------------------------------14-----14-------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
*
* The notes will blend together with the delay, creating a spacey sound.

When the voice comes again, play the intro chords and also scratch
the strings for the seagull effect again. Then play the normal verse figure
and the chorus, and after the chorus comes the finale:

Play this a couple of times

!--12-12-13-13-12-12-10-10-10-12-13-13-12-12-10-10-10-!
!-----------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------!
!-----------------------------------------------------!

Then this

!--12-12-13-13-12-12-10-10-12-12-13-13-12-12-10-10-!
!--------------------------------------------------!
!--------------------------------------------------!
!--------------------------------------------------!
!--------------------------------------------------!
!--------------------------------------------------!

And then this, with the last chord played like the intro.

!--8-10-10-10-8-10-10>12-12-10-10-8-10---------------!
!------------------------------------------------10--!
!-------------------------------------------------9--!
!-------------------------------------------------7--!
!----------------------------------------------------!
!----------------------------------------------------!

That's it. Enjoy!
